Perspective: Old Growth Siberian Larch

Every Heart Plank floor is made from the heartwood of a particular specie. One of the most amazing characteristics of our Siberian Larch is that in Perfection Quartersawn Grade, it looks so much like Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine that even experts cannot tell the difference. Actually, all of our Larch grades have a similar look to Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine in their respective grades. Only the knot characteristics are different. Perfection Quartersawn Grade in both species is absolutely clear. So, it is very easy to see how they compare. We post the two grades here so you can take a close look. This is a house that was recently completed that has a tremendous amount of high quality wood in it. All of the floors in the house are the same grade as you see here. The stair cases and kitchen cabinets are also in this same specie. Look Closely! Can you tell whether this material is Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine or Siberian Larch?

Comparison of Other Grades

Siberian Larch vs Antique Heart Pine

As stated above, all of our Siberian Larch grades have a similar look to Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine in their respective grades. Only the knot characteristics are different. The knots in Siberian Larch are a different color than in Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine. Many people prefer the type knots that are in the Siberian Larch because they are generally slightly smaller than the knots in pine.  Both species darken with exposure to ultraviolet light. And, the color of both species can be described as ranging from honey to burnt orange. However, Siberian Larch does not tend to have nearly as many “yellow heartwood streaks” as Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine.
